Just loaded Snow Leopard

Hit the Apple store at Ridgedale around 11am this morning. Place was packed. Line for Snow Leopard was about 5 deep but moving pretty quickly.

Grabbed Subway, then to the home office to do some loading.

I thought I read somewhere that's it's a 15-20 minute upgrade...uh uh. Took almost an hour. While I was waiting, I putzed around on my XP machine while watching the Macbook out of the corner of my eye.

After a few reboots...upgrade complete.

I haven't really tried anything yet, but I did note shutdown and startup times.

Shutdown - 5 seconds (no open applications)

Startup - 75 seconds

It's possible that the first shutdown/startup sequence may still be shuffling some bits and in the future it'll be even faster...but I'm pleased. Opening up applications seem a bit snappier.

I've got a 17" MacBook Pro (2008 model), 2.5 Ghz Intel Dual-core with 4GB of RAM.

Looking forward to trying out the Exchange Server integration, see if it actually works. I've been dropping into Parallels to run Outlook 2007...and even though it's bearable running a VM, I'd prefer not to.

Anyone else moving to SL?

Oh YEAH!

Exchange integration worked great. Plopped in the account name, password, server name and my Mail, Calendar and Contacts all sync up. Sweeeeet.

I suppose it would be even awesomer (sorry, more awesome) if it synced up notes, but I don't use Exchange notes anymore. Switched to the uber-cool Evernote a few months ago when I jumped on the macwagon.

Alright, I won't post every cool little thing about SL...but I AM looking forward to the supposedly new & improved Finder.

It's running great for me, but I can't yet test Exchange integration...

Upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard: Initial Impressions

Basically, our organization is running an un-updated version of Exchange Server 2007, so I'm going to have to wait for the one and only feature I really, truly care about.

Thanks for your review. I had heard about and forgotten the click-hold Expose launch trick. Your article reminded me and yeah...it's cool.

For me...one thing I had been really looking forward to was the increased icon size in Finder...up to 512. At work, we've got a photographer who will take dozens of shots on a location shoot and they all look identical when they're tiny. It makes finding the one that was actually used in the paper a real chore.

Ah - that would be a nice thing to have, for sure!

I've been running SL now for several weeks and it's really nice.

Only problem ... my MacBook Pro (early 2008 model) often runs VERY hot under 10.6, even though my daily workflow hasn't changed. I've searched around and apparently other Apple laptop owners have been experiencing a similar effect.

To give you an idea: the free Temperature Monitor app reports that my "graphics processor temperature diode" is reaching 83 C, when I'm not doing anything more than browsing the web and watching some flash-based videos -- that's crazy!! And it's at least 10 C hotter than it would get when I was performing the same tasks under 10.5.

My hope is that Apple will fix this in an upcoming version/patch of SL. I'm presently running 10.6.1.

I tried the NVRAM/PRAM and SMC resets recommended on some forums, but it hasn't improved the situation.

I hope I'm not shortening the lifetime of my machine by running so hot for extensive hours each day .. but I've got to keep working, as I'm sure others here can appreciate.

I haven't had this problem on my MacBook Pros (either the 15" or 13"), but I don't use them on my lap all that often, either, so perhaps I simply haven't noticed it yet.

@michaelsbradleyjr

I've got a late 2008 MB Pro 17" and it runs VERY hot. Always has even before SL. Since I had been on Windows laptops for years, I found this to be a disturbing issue so I spent quite a lot of time researching it.

Apparently, this is very common for MacBook's...they do run hot. From everything I've read though, this is acceptable.

Here's a good link about the subject...

P.S. I use a cooling pad and it does help bring the body temp down so that it's not too hot to touch.
