Open Source Catholic Challenge: Rosary in HTML5

An idea I've been having in the back of my mind for some time is putting the Rosary (or another devotional) online in such a way as to (a) faithfully instruct individuals on the purpose and beauty in its prayer, and (b) stretch my skills and build a usable, friendly, and prayerful web application.

I envision building a standards-compliant/HTML5 site which leads a Catholic through the recitation of the Holy Rosary, or maybe the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and works across as many modern browsers as is possible, without Flash, and without any of the 'cheese factor' that I see on many other similar projects...

Would anyone else be interested in collaborating in a project like this? I will probably do a little here, a little there, as I don't have a lot of time on my hands right now :)

Good idea. I'm no programmer, but I use the Linux version of Google Chrome Browser (dev channel) so I'd be willing to help out with testing, if needed. Really liking some of the HTML5 examples I've seen; YouTube w/HTML5 enabled is way better than w/Flash. And while not an Apple user, I suppose being Flash-free could allow Catholic iPod/iPad users to use the application.

I'd like this just for the fact that I could use it on my iPad :D

Jeff -

This sounds like something we'd be very interested in having for the Rosary Army website if wanted to hit that audience of folks, as well. So might I suggest an images would be of the knotted-twine variety? We could provide tons of high quality images :)

That would be quite wonderful - I figure we could have settings for 'knot rosary, bead rosary, etc.' (just need to make sure nothing looks cheesy).

Check with Sr Kathryn of the Daughters of St. Paul electronic publishing department. She put together a fabulous (and definitely un-cheesy) Rosary app for iPhone; perhaps working with her you could then get the content: images, meditations... (and even the music!)....
