OSC Logo Ideas?

It'd be pretty awesome if we could create a great, clean logo to be used for Open Source Catholic. Right now the Twitter account and such all use a simple wordmark (OSC), but a good logo that prints, displays, and looks great would be quite beneficial, I think.

Any ideas for what it should look like? How it should be styled? Please let us know!

Not Bad...

Not bad. Maybe an outline/silhouette shape of some sort. Or heck, what about maybe the Pope with his mitre sitting behind one (silhouetted, of course) ;-)

I will be working to make a few drafts at some point, but anyone else can feel free to contribute as well.

ideas

I'm working up a couple quick sketches in illustrator. One is based on this http://www.classicalastrology.org/isidore.jpg which is from De Natura Rerum, a book written by Saint Isadore, the patron saint of computer programmers (officially and unofficially depending on the source). The other is sort of based on the Open Source circle and keyhole seen here: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/architecture/opensource.aspx except that this circle will have the keys to the kingdom incorporated instead of a keyhole.

The logo needs to be simple and graphic so it is easily identified and easily reproduced in all forms from print to web to video. I'll link to my sketches when they are done and people can chime in with thoughts and comments.

Keys to the Kingdom

Ooh!! Keys to the kingdom - that's an idea I can really jump on board with. And thanks for using Illustrator - I don't think we could accept anything less ;-)

Here are a couple quick sketches of what I'm thinking. Let me know what you think. I need a little more time to play with some 3D treatments of them, maybe superimposed on a sphere or something like that. http://lappedcatholic.blogspot.com/2009/06/illustrator-sketch-idea-for-o...

Beautiful!

I really, really, REALLY like the first option (the key with the Cross).

It would definitely reproduce well across a variety of media.

Okay, very good. Any

Okay, very good. Any suggestions as per color or tweaks etc.?

I'll play around with some type possibilities for the words Open Source Catholic.

Wordmark

I'm going to keep using Warnock Pro as the Open Source Catholic main font; I like the color you chose for the logo, maybe if you do a slight gradient on it, from that color to a little darker shade. I'll have more time to look at it later ;-)

I've added a gradient as you

I've added a gradient as you suggested. You can view it at the same blog post. All feedback is appreciated.

Quite Good!

I like it, a lot! Would you be willing to license the image (including the AI file) as a GPL-licensed photo, similar to the Druplicon? http://drupal.org/node/9068 - I could create a page similar to that for promotional purposes, and link back to your site and give credit where credit is due!

I'm glad you like it. I'm

I'm glad you like it. I'm more than happy to license the image and file. I guess I'm so used to "work for hire" that I wasn't really thinking about licensing. As long as I can get a link back to my site somewhere I'll be more than happy. Just let me know what formats and sizes you want the image in or if you just need the AI file. I'll zip them/it up and email it whereever you say.

Wow, that logo is awesome!

Wow, that logo is awesome! Definitely a good idea. *sniffle* Some of us can't afford major adobe products though. I would have used inkscape, gimp, and paint.net. :P

Open Source Solutions for Graphics

Well, that's not a problem! Inkscape and GIMP are probably two of the most prominent open source projects that actually work pretty well. The interface and lack of a few key features keep them from hitting critical mass, but heck, the tools are only about 1/10 of the reason why beautiful design happens!

I don't know...

Jeff...did you bribe him to make it a Drupally color? :)

Seriously though...it's great. Very Web 2.0.

Bribery :-)

Yes, of course! Drupal + Web 2.0-ish is super cool!

...and it is a good enough logo that I think we can amp it up to Web 3.0 when the need arises!!
