Looking for photo tagging / archiving software

Howdy folks,

At my day gig, we usually post around 25-50 photos a week online with stories. The images are a mixture of those taken by our staff photographer and also a bunch from istockphoto ($$$).

I've been in the habit of keeping all these images each week with the intention of re-using stuff, however a year later I haven't started and the # of images is huge. Nothing has been tagged either.

I'm now planning on tagging all these photos and trying to setup a search index for them...but I'm looking for the right software for the job (open or proprietary).

Would be nice if it's supported by both Mac and Windows and more than one computer can access/share the index.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Craig

CS

I have been switching to Picasaweb, using Picasa for Mac on my wife's iMac. Picasa for mac works great by the way.You can set an album to auto sync with an album on Picasaweb, any changes are automatically done. The web version has facial recognition that works beautifully. 1Gig free, 40 Gig $75.00 per year. There is an image size max of 1600x??? resolution (Picasa auto resizes on uploading).

Correction

Actually Picasa allows you to upload in the "original" size, it just defaulted to 1600x??? on my install. You can also get 10Gig of space for $20 per year..

If you're using only a Mac,

If you're using only a Mac, then Aperture (or maybe even iPhoto, if you use mostly JPEG) is the way to go.

If you need to use more than one computer, Lightroom is probably a good option, but I've never worked in a networked-database environment... Microsoft has a media organization utility as well, and Photoshop + Adobe Bridge is apparently pretty good at networking a photo tagging/organization system.

Thanks guys

Picasa was my favorite for a long time until I switched to a mac...now iphoto is my primary photo tool. I still miss some of those Picasa features, and even though they now have a mac version, iphoto integrates seamlessly with my setup which includes an iphone.

I was kinda hoping to find a mac/win solution that'd work on a network, we have about 5 people who would access this. But from what I'm finding, it's cost prohibitive.

Lightroom might be an option though...still looking into that one.

I found an app called 'Photo Mechanic' that has some promise...only $150. I may end up using Adobe Bridge CS4 since I already have that with my Adobe CS4 suite.

It seems like my tagging will take place in EXIF/IPTC which most apps support reading.

If I finally land on something, I'll pass along my experiences. Thanks again for the input!

Sure thing! Using Bridge

Sure thing! Using Bridge does, in fact, embed the tags/metadata using EXIF, meaning the information will carry over into whatever app you'd like to use.
