Is anyone else on Virb/tried it out? I really dig the aesthetics and some of the functionalities. I'm just wondering if the only reason it doesn't catch on like wildfire is b/c of Facebook's and MySpace's monopoly.

Looks cool...

Definitely more aesthetically pleasing than FB & MS!

IMHO..social networks are a bit over-saturated at the moment. I don't know if another straight-up 'community' site will work on such a large-scale as Facebook. Also, most sites with a web presence have been adding community features to keep people playing in their sandbox.

Having said all that, I do think there can be some very successful 'niche' communities that cater to a certain segment of the population who share some kind of common interest.

Virb rocks! I've been trying

Virb rocks! I've been trying it out for a while today, and it's quite excellent. Here's my profile:

I also started a Catholic group on Virb:

Two problems they'll have to fix:

  1. Speed - the site is not super-fast (or at least seems not super-fast) right now. More AJAX would help.
  2. Finding data more quickly - there's a lot of it, but it's aggregated across multiple pages. More consolidation would be nice.

My Thoughts on Virb

I came across Virb a while ago, but as a graphic designer, I was a bit turned off by the simplicity of it (another problem that I have with Facebook). Am I missing something? How is this any better than say Friendster, which also has a minimal customization capability? Funny thing is though, how much I love Twitter : )

It's nice in terms of its ability to play nice with all the other social networks and be more of a 'hub' network. Plus you can set things up and forget about it :-)

Sorta like that, but I figure I won't ever go back to the site, except maybe to add a new feed from time to time.

I agree with Jeff. I'm not

I agree with Jeff. I'm not anti-Facebook, and since everyone is there, that's where I am. (It's a vicious cycle, isn't it?) But there are some anti-Facebook folks who like finding their own niche, and I think that's what Virb does well.

When the site first launched some years ago, they were really up-to-date with their capabilities. (They even had that nifty lights-off feature that YouTube, Vimeo, Hulu, etc. make use of today.) That's what initially impressed me. I think they're just now beginning to really overhaul again and jump ahead of the latest trends, so I'm curious to see if they succeed.

And Josh, I must say your comment about its simplicity surprised me. I LOVE the minimalistic approach.
