This may or may not seem like a silly question to a lot of you...  Recently my office has needed a video which is already on YouTube to be posted on our web site.  Under normal circumstances, we would just embed it, but, as it happens, this particular one is an hour long and we only need the last 30 minutes or so.  We would like to download it and edit it, but in looking into this, I was presented with the option of downloading free converter software.  Rather than submit my diocesan computer to potential ravishing of malware via unfamiliar and untrustworthy software, I thought I might ask if anyone out there has a solution.

Is there a free converter that you all trust?  Or perhaps should I be going about this in a different manner?  I will appreciate the input!

Unfortunately, converting

Unfortunately, converting from an FLV file (flash) to MP4 or some other easy-to-edit format requires a converter, and most of the good ones aren't free. You are right to be wary of the free ones offered online, as many contain malware.

http://vixy.net/ is a good choice for YouTube converting, though, but you might have mixed success...

You also need to beware that the video you're trying to grab might be protected by copyright, so you should contact the original author to get permission to use the video.

I haven't tested it myself, but this may do the trick for you:

Yep, it works

All you have to do is add "t=MmSs" to the end of your YouTube URL in your embed code, where "M" is the number of minutes, and "S" is the number of seconds.

Here's what I use...

I just started using this firefox plugin: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10137/

Works great for converting to MP4 and I suck it into iTunes for my iPhone and iPad.

Just another consideration though...

If you're going to be hosting this mongo 30 minute video, be sure you've got the bandwidth for it. ;)

IF you have the OK from the video owner, you might want to download it to MP4 and use something like iMovie to cut it up and then post it back up to YouTube and embed on your site. Let YT handle the bandwidth ya know!
