[Some good discussion going on in the forums about video editing software – OSC]

Can anyone recommend video editing software with a user friendly interface (for PC...)?  Our Archdiocese is attempting to do a video contest for the Year for Priests, but to do that we have to have the ability to do at least minor edits.  Neither of the two people in our office have had experience with editing, and so far we have found Vegas Studio to be a bit of a headache...  We have also tried free online video editing sites, but have found those to be overly simplified.  I guess we're looking for something in between... Does anyone have any recommendations?

For simple edits, something

For simple edits, something like the built in Windows Movie Maker isn't too bad... but it can't do a lot.

Video Studio (from Corel) isn't too bad either... but there's nothing (literally!) like iMovie on the Mac, in terms of ease of use and quick 'n dirty editing/production.

For more advanced stuff, Vegas is okay, but I would go with Adobe Premiere (on PC) or Final Cut Express or Final Cut Studio (on Mac).

 I have Adobe Premiere

I have Adobe Premiere Elements and I've had problems with it.  Make sure you read the hardware requirements - it doesn't play nice with certain A/V cards and/or software.

Adobe Premiere Elements

I've been playing around with Adobe Premiere Elements, and I like it. It works well for me, though I have not tried to use it with a camcorder yet. It edits the video files from my still cameras very nicely, and it seems very powerful for the price.

For PC...

I'll have to second the Vegas and Movie Maker solutions...haven't tried anything else.

Switched to Mac and iMovie is great. Final Cut Pro is pretty much the industry standard but FC Express is cheaper.

Video Editing Software

I use a couple different video editing software programs, depending on the look that I want.  Like geerlingguy stated, Windows Movie Maker does an okay job.  I used to use Pinnacle , however there were a lot of glitches and since I've upgraded to Vista, they want you to buy the new version : (  I can't afford Adobe Premiere, so I've actually never played around with it.  Another program that I used to use was Video Wave.  A lot of these programs do the same stuff, but each has its own unique interface, special features, and stability.

A new program that I've been playing around with lately is called Camtasia Studio by Tech Smith®.  Its a bit pricy, but I won a copy in a raffle at PodCamp Ohio last month (Sweet!).  What is unique about this program, is that it is suppurb for capturing screencasts.  Expecially the PowerPoint feature for recording live presenations.  You can captuer the slides, while also capturing the speaker talking in a smaller frame.  Or you can toggle back and forthe between the two.  So, if you are going to do live recording and want to cut down on your editing time, or record a lot of tutorials with sceen-capturing and voiceover, You might want to checkout Camtasia Studio.  I'm pretty sure that you can download a trial version from their website.  Hope this helps.

Camtasia is king...

Camtasia is king of the screencast realm (PC)...but like Joshua said, bit pricey...lists for $299.

Awhile back I purchased 'Demo Creator' which is OK, for $99.

Haven't looked around for screencast sw on the mac though...any suggestions? Sorry if this is too OT.

For the Mac, I heartily

For the Mac, I heartily recommend iShowU HD - it's not expensive at all, and it works simply and quickly.
