  • Mass and Sacrament Times on the Archdiocese of St. Louis' Website

One question I’m often asked by many other diocesan web development teams/individuals is how we put together our online Mass Time search (also used for searching adoration and reconciliation times). We also get questions about how we do our online mapping—but I’ve already covered that (see: Beautiful, Easy Maps in Drupal using Views and Mapstraction).

We already have a database provided by the Archdiocesan IT department (they maintain it with the help of our diocesan Parish Support staff, and parish...

  • Mobile App Development?

Was just wondering - does anyone else here do much work with iPhone/Android/other mobile app development? If so, I might open up a Mobile Development forum or something of the like, so we can discuss issues there.

The main reason I'm asking is that the Archdiocese of St. Louis is developing an iPhone app that has a few different features, and it'd be great to have a place where we can collaborate with other Catholic developers (specifically) to discuss issues relating to our Catholic approach to an app...

    StackOverflow and...

  • Communications Issues - The Catholic Church's "Confession" App

[Note: Please read through the comments at the end of this post for some great insights about this situation.]

Time and time again, I'm seeing media reports that portray something that happens in the Church with either incorrect, or easily-misconstrued wording, and it continually paints the Church in a strange—if not bad—light.

The latest example: a new app called 'Confession' on the iPhone App Store.

From BBC's article on the app:

It also allows them to examine their conscience based on personalised factors such as age, sex and marital status...

  • Beautiful, Easy Maps in Drupal using Views and Mapstraction

I've been asked about the Archdiocese of St. Louis's online parish search mapping functionality enough times that I finally made a quick video walkthrough of how it was done. The video below explains it all—basically, we use the Location module to attach addresses to nodes and geocode (get lat/lon) the addresses, and we use Views + Mapstraction to make the spiffy maps all over the site.

The functionality was originally set up by the kind folks at Palantir, and tweaked a bit over time by me to make what...

  • How to become a good open source project manager?

I am not sure where is the best channel to ask this question.

Because I normally work alone or a group of programmers in same location. I don't have any experience about open source project work in group before. However, I would like to improve the quality of the open source project with the helps of the community. So, I would like to know:

    • How to recruit members for open source development from any locations?
    • Where can I learn the management skill for the open source project? I would like...

  • OpenID Disabled for OSC Site Login

Amongst a few other architectural changes on the site (disabling some unused modules, cleaning up code in our style files a bit, etc.), I have disabled the OpenID module on the website, meaning the one or two users who were using that for login can no longer do so.

To those users who are now having trouble logging in... email me with your account name, and I'll set up a password for you.

The reasons for doing this are twofold: 1. Only .5% of our users were using OpenID logins,...
