USCCB Announces 'Browser-Based eBook' Catechism
This morning, the USCCB announced the release of a new Catechism of the Catholic Church as an eBook. My hopes that this was finally true were dashed when I found two problems:
- The "Browser-Based eBook" is not an eBook—it's the same thing that's been available on the Vatican website for years, just with a search bar at the top and without a parchment background.
- The actual ePub Catechism is still $10.
The ePub file costs very little (in terms of infrastructure) to download—probably a penny or less per download. The...

Vatican Applies for Four gTLDs
Today ICANN release a list of all the generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) that have been applied for since January 12 this year. Among rather oddball names such as .lol, .boo, and .barefoot, the Vatican (yes, the Vatican.va one in Italy) has applied for four domains, all variations of the English word ‘Catholic’. The domains are:
- .catholic
- .католик
- .كاثوليك

Not all of these domains will necessarily be approved, but I think there’s a good chance they will be, since the Vatican’s the only entity asking for them, and since...

Site Reorganization, #oscatholic IRC channel decommissioned
A few quick updates on Open Source Catholic:
IRC Channel
(What is IRC?) I’ve unregistered #oscatholic from the Freenode IRC server, and have redirected the IRC page/instructions to the pre-existing ##catholic channel. There was never a whole lot of traffic to #oscatholic, and perhaps we may use ##catholic a little more from time to time. (It’s not like there are a lot of Catholics on IRC anyways, at least not that I’ve found… but I still like IRC!).
Site Reorganization, Cleanup
In preparation for some discussion and work...

Catholic XML
Continue readingAn XML schema that describes the Catholic Church. It is based on taking the Canon Law document and turning it into an XML. It should ultimately be a namespace run by the vatican. There is a need to create an XML schema to describe Catholic organisations, from parish, to school, to diocese, to hospital. As more and more Catholic organisations have a web presence and their websites become more sophisticated, there is a need to create a standard way to interchange information. In a diocese, for instance, if each parish...
